Catlett's Late Score Lifts SCC To Championship

Southeast Community College basketball player and Bruning-Davenport alumna Cecelia Catlett’s free throw with 4.5 seconds left gave the SCC Storm a 61-60 win over North Platte Community College in the Region IX Division II championship game March 3.

The Storm earned the right to play in the district championship against Kirkwood Community College in Council Bluffs March 16.

In the contest against North Platte, Southeast started the game well and took a 29-15 lead in the first half, with Catlett scoring 10 points. The Knights fought back hard leaving Southeast with a three-point lead 29-26 at the half.

Although the Storm led for most of the second half, NPCC was able to stay with SCC shooting 45 percent from the three-point line. With 2:10 left in the game, North Platte hit a three to give them their first lead at 60-57. SCC’s Abrielle Davis was fouled and made both free throws to put the Storm within one point.

The Storm came up with a steal on the next series, Aujanee Armstrong was fouled and made one of two free throws to tie the game at 60. With 28 seconds left, Cece got her 12th rebound off a Knight miss to give the Storm a possession with 28 seconds left.

With time running out, Catlett made a move to the basket and was fouled going up for the shot. She made her first free throw to give the Storm its one-point lead and win the game.

Catlett finished the game with 13 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals. She was 8-10 from the free throw line.
