After the Bruning-Davenport/Shickley girls' heart-breaking overtime loss to Friend in the D1-2 Sub-district final, things looked bleak for the 19-6 Eagles to secure a wildcard berth for this week's NSAA Class D-1 State Basketball Tournament.  After all, Howells-Dodge had already been defeated in its sub-district and looked poised to snatch up the first wildcard bid that became available.  Then, BDS would need the top four teams in wildcard points to win their district final.  And, that wasn't enough if the No. 6 wildcard team didn't fall down far enough in points if it lost its game on Friday night.
Well, the basketball gods shined on the Eagle girls and BDS will be competing in Lincoln this week.  Top point earners Friend, Emerson-Hubbard, Fullerton and Dundy County Stratton all won their district finals and Kenesaw's victory over the then No. 6 wildcard team Elm Creek knocked the Buffaloes out of the tournament.
Now, BDS will be the No. 6 seed in the Class D-1 Tournament and square off against once-beaten Fullerton at 9 a.m. on Thursday at Lincoln North Star High School.  This is a fitting reward for this years Crossroads Conference champions and the winners of eight of its last nine games, which includes the 59-58 overtime loss to No. 1 overall seed Friend after the Eagles led the Bulldogs for most of their sub-district final contest.
With a win over the 24-1 Warriors, BDS would then play the Cambridge (19-5) and 25-1 Emerson-Hubbard winner at 9 a.m., on Friday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.  The Class D-1 final starts at 9 a.m., this Saturday at the Pinnacle Bank arena.
