The Fillmore Central boys placed second in the team standings at the season-opening Superior Invite on Thursday.  The Panthers trailed McCool Junction by just eight points on September 3.  Hastings St. Cecilia was a close third at the eight-team meet.
Garrett Whitley and Chandler Schelkopf paced the FC boys with eight and ninth-place finishes.  Whitley was clocked in 20 minutes, three seconds and Schelkopf finished in 20:09.  Noah Temme was 12th in Superior in 20:17 and teammate Adam Hoarty was 16th at 20:42.
"The boys were runner-up by a very small margin," Panther coach Brandi Conway said.  "They looked great together."
Conway noted Schelkopf improved his time by 2:20 over last year.  Whitley was 33 seconds faster and Temme trimmed 14 seconds off his time from a year ago.
Grace Jacobson earned a medal for the FC girls by finishing the course in Superior in 24:58 and placing sixth.  Elise Frook took 41st.  Sophia Frook landed in 42nd position and Katy Sanchez was 44th.  The Panther girls finished in seventh place in the team standings.  Fairbury rolled to the girls' race team title.
"Elise and Katy, both freshmen, have already improved their form—I'm happy for them," Conway said.
Cole Jividen took 23rd in the boys race (21:32) and Ryan Poppert was 49th.  Braden Myers landed in 79th.  Jividen trimmed 1:30 off his time from a year ago in Superior.
"Overall, I was very happy with today's results," Conway said.
