Panther Boys Race Past Field At FC Invite

Fillmore Central's Xavier Bridges captured four gold medals on Thursday and helped propel the Panthers to an easy team victory at the 2015 Fillmore Central Track and Field Invite.
The Panther speedster rolled to victories in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, 10.97 and 22.73 seconds, respectively, and also took the title in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 5.5-inches.  Bridges ran the opening leg in FC's golden 400-meter relay squad (44.76 seconds).  Joining the speedy senior on this team were Nate Rasmussen, Josh Taylor and Christian Lovan.
Panthers Jarrod Hinrichs and Trevor Adams flip-flopped for golds in the shot put and discus.  Hinrichs won the shot put with a heave of 49-6 and Adams took second (47-11).  Adams bested his teammate in the discus with a winning throw of 135-4.  Hinrichs was just an inch behind.
FC distance specialist Conrad Schelkopf continued his outstanding showings in the 1,600-meter run by winning the event in 4:46.34.  Teammate Leyton Hopken defeated a strong field in the 800-meter run.  The Panther junior was first in 2:06.13.
Schelkopf and Hopken joined Davis Jacobson and Lance Donovan in winning the 3,200-meter relay in 8:34.33.  The Panther weightman's 400-meter relay squad easily bested its field in winning the event in 53.18 seconds.  FC won the team title on Thursday by 82 points over second-place Malcolm, 194-112.  Centennial was third.  David City and Silver Lake rounded out the field.  Thayer Central was unable to make the invite due to flooding last Wednesday.
"This was a good tune-up for districts," Panther head boys track coach Adam Verhage said.  "A lot of kids were able to compete here.  I like where we are at this time.  I'm looking forward to Thursday."
FC travels to Hebron (Thayer Central) this Thursday, May 14, to compete in the C-4 District track meet.
Other top six scores for the Panther boys were turned in by Nate Rasmussen, second long jump, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash; Wyatt Schiermeyer, third pole vault; Chandler Schelkopf, fourth high jump, fifth 3,200-meter run, sixth pole vault; Aaron Poppert, third high jump and fifth triple jump; Christian Lovan, sixth 110-meter hurdles and sixth in the 200-meter dash; Josh Taylor, fourth 100-meter dash; Kole Karcher, third 1,600-meter run; Cole Jividen, sixth 1,600-meter run; Ethan DeLong, second 400-meter dash; Noah Temme, fourth 800-meter run; and Garrett Whitley, second 3,200-meter run.
Insufficient results for the Southern Nebraska Conference Track and Field Championships left Conrad Schelkopf off from being the conference champion in the 1,600-meter run.  The Panther senior covered the distance in 4:49.28 in David City for the win.  Xavier Bridges was also conference runner-up in the 100-meter dash (11.37 seconds) on May 2 and teammate Nate Rasmussen was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 11.92 seconds.
