Knowing they would have to win their way to State this year, Bruning-Davenport/Shickley dug too deep of a hole early to get past Pawnee City and fell to the 24-7 Indians in the finals of the D1-1 Sub-district last Tuesday night in Beatrice.

PC prevailed in the match 25-20, 25-22, 10-25, 25-22. The Eagles ended their inaugural 2010 campaign at 23-7.

After dropping the first two matches at Beatrice High School on November 2, BDS easily won the third set and appeared to have more than enough momentum to make the finals go five sets. But the firepower of Kelly Percival and a scrappy Indian squad prevented the comeback.

Shelby Garland thumped 17 kills for the Eagles on Tuesday night and MaKaleigh Yantzie added 10 terminations. Ashley Hinrichs put up 18 ace sets for BDS and Whitney Walters tallied 10 assists.

Garland smacked three aces against PC and Hinrichs laced down one. Erika Schroeder was stellar on defense for the Eagles with 25 digs and seven ace sets. BDS middle Taylor Houck tallied four ace blocks in the season-ending match.

The Eagles made it into the sub-district finals after a three-set victory over fellow state-rated Meridian (20-7) last Monday. BDS defeated the Mustangs 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 at Beatrice.

Garland and Yantzie both cracked nine kills against Meridian and Schroeder added six terminations. Hinrichs tallied 15 assists in the win over the mustangs and Walters added seven ace sets.

Zoey Messman snapped three ace serves on November 1 and Garland and Schroeder both belted one.

Garland paced the Eagle defense against Meridian with 24 digs and Yantzie came up with 16. Schroeder also had 14 digs. Kaitlyn Krupicka tallied three ace blocks against the Mustangs and Caressa Reinsch added two ace blocks.

Playing in their final matches for the Eagles in Beatrice were Schroeder, Krupicka, Reinsch, Messman and MaKenna Coy.
