Despite taking the first set and battling valiantly in the fourth set, Fillmore Central was again unable to get past Southern Nebraska Conference (SNC) rival Sandy Creek last Tuesday in the finals of the C1-2 Sub-district.

The loss to the 27-2 Cougars the week before cost the 24-8 Panthers the SNC championship. The defeat on Tuesday at Norris High School cost state-rated FC a chance to advance to the C-1 NSAA State Volleyball Tournament. Five of the Panthers' eight losses this season have come at the hands of the Cougars.

Sandy Creek won the final match on November 2, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 36-34.

Meg Loontjer paced the FC offense in the sub-district final with 15 kills and two ace serves. The senior was also stellar on defense with seven digs and three ace blocks. Panther Maggie Malone smacked 12 kills, posted 25 digs and came up with two ace blocks.

Heather Broman played solid defense for FC with 12 digs and four ace blocks. Haley Norvell tallied 48 ace sets in the match and also smacked two ace serves. Lindsey Maloley cracked eight kills and recorded two ace blocks for the Panthers. Christa Scott snapped down five kills for FC and also recorded nine digs. Kelsey Swartz tallied 12 digs for the Panthers.

FC defeated 21-11 Lincoln Lutheran in a five-set thriller last Monday, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 22-25, 16-14, to advance to the sub-district final. The Warriors were one of four teams who were able to defeat the Panthers this volleyball season.

While battling a series of mid-season injuries, Sutton was able to beat FC on its home court and Hastings St. Cecilia beat the Panthers in the FC Volleyball Invite at the beginning of the year. Loontjer and Amaly Reinsch were the two seniors on this season's squad.
