Sparks Burn Up State Competition

The Geneva Welding Sparks traveled to Lexington on July 2 to compete in the 16 and Under State Class B Tournament. On Friday evening, they met up with the Dodge Killer Cleats. The Sparks easily won their first game, 11-0 in five innings.

On Saturday afternoon, they played the Twin River Titans. The Sparks won 8-0. Later that afternoon, the Sparks played a close game against Wayne. The Sparks came out on top again with a score of 2-1.

There was a rain delay on Sunday morning. There were two teams left in the winner’s bracket, the Sparks and North Platte. On Sunday afternoon, the Sparks soundly defeated North Platte 12-4 in five innings.

The championship game was between the Sparks and Wayne, who was coming out of the loser’s bracket. The Sparks brought home the championship trophy beating Wayne in seven innings, 7-2.

Lindsay Eichelberger pitched four games for the Sparks with 23 strikeouts. Macy Jones pitched the last game against Wayne and had three strikeouts. The Sparks are coached by Deb Yates, Steve Adkisson and Rocky Jones. They are sponsored by Steve Yates of Geneva Welding.

In each of the past four years, the Sparks have brought home a trophy in state competition. In 2007, they placed third at Auburn in the 14 and Under State Class C Tournament. In 2008, they were the 14 and Under State Class C Champions and last year, they were runners-up in the 16 and Under State Class C Tournament.
