Doug Straight Recognized For 30 Years Of Service

Doug Straight, environmental and agricultural education instructor at Shickley High School, was one of over 120 agricultural education instructors that attended the Nebraska Career Education Conference and the Nebraska Agricultural Educators Association (NAEA) Summer Conference that was held in Kearney June 7-10. NAEA members took the opportunity to grow and bring ideas back to local programs.

The Conference allowed attendees to develop professional leadership skills through energetic and motivational speakers such as Dr. Tim Elmore and Jeff Beals. Through hands on workshops in areas such as land judging, bee keeping, FFA resources, SAE ideas and communities of practice participants learned practical skills to teach to students through out the state.

Straight presented to the attendees on the use of Angel (myelearning) an on line learning management system that he uses in his classroom and to deliver on line ag classes to other schools that do not have an agriculture education program.

NAEA Conference highlights included discussions of the various legislative and membership issues, National Program Standards, National Content Standards, web based Agriscience curriculum and SAE initiatives. Members also shared innovative units through the Ideas Unlimited program.

At the annual NAEA Awards banquet, the members recognized Doug Straight of Shickley High School for 30 years of service to agriculture education. Straight has been at the same school for the last 30 years.

The NAEA Summer Conference also serves to transact the business of the association. Straight served on the State Fair committee, whose responsibility is to make recommendations to the state FFA Division General Superintendent. The NAEA believes in grass roots leadership with members taking the leading role in all association activities.

Elections of the 2010-11 NAEA Board of Directors resulted in Kurt VanDeWalle of Fillmore Central High School elected president-elect of the association.

The Nebraska Agricultural Educators Association believes in professionals providing agricultural education for the global community through visionary leadership, advocacy and service.
