Over 200 Kids Participate In Youth Fishing Derby

On May 22, the Lower Big Blue NRD, Beatrice Optimist Club, Big Indian Archers and Swan 5 Advisory Council hosted the ninth annual youth fishing derby at the Willard L. Meyer Recreation Area in Saline County. The day consisted of a youth fishing derby; casting contests; Saline County Sheriffs presentation; boat ride with safety presentation and fishing activities by the Nebraska Game and Parks; DEQ aquatic insect activity; hands-on archery demonstrations by Big Indian Archery Club Members; and a free hot-dog lunch.

Over 200 kids ages 2-18, participated in the youth fishing derby with awards being presented for the most fish caught, largest fish caught, smallest fish caught and for the casting contest. Prizes were awarded to all participants.

The top award winners in each age group where: 5 and under: Most fish-Calab Fralin, Beatrice, 4-fish, Largest fish – Ashlyn Zoubek, Wilber, 16 ½ inch bass, Smallest fish-Clara Maple, Milford, 6-inch bluegill, and Casting Contest-Luke Hamilton of Friend.

Ages 6-9: Most fish- Jaiden Papik, Exeter, Alexis Schmidt, Geneva and Erin Schmidt, 6-fish, Largest fish-Dustin Wiruth, Lincoln, 17-inch bass, Smallest fish-Emma Maple, Milford, 4-inch bluegill, and Casting Contest – Clayton Schnell of Dorchester.

Ages 10-12: Most fish-Stuart Rohr, Tobias, 7-fish, Largest fish-Brooke Schreve, Lincoln, 16-inch bass, Smallest fish-Jake VanWeston, Tobias, Wendi Haufle, Crete, and Savannah Bontrager, Milford, 6-fish, and Casting Contest – Colton Kelle of Beatrice.

Ages 13-18: Most fish-Blake Papik, Exeter, 3-fish, Largest fish- Keldon Barr, Plymouth, 15-inch bass, Smallest fish – Brandon Jackson, Tobias, 7-inch bluegill and Casting Contest – Dillon Wiruth of Lincoln.
